We recently sat down with local tattoo artist Ganne, aka Smolbrat. Known for her gothic work, she shares the inspiration behind her practice, her process, and the evolution of her style.
HOW HAS YOUR AESTHETIC EVOLVED SINCE YOU FIRST BEGAN?
I feel like I've kept it similar-ish, but I'm just dipping my toes in and out of different styles. I do get more custom requests than I do my own style, but I'm flattered. My favourite style would be tribal, it’s definitely up there. I think it's really hot.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE PROCESS?
I definitely think getting to know my client and their vision. I love seeing the end result and their reaction to the tattoo, they're just so fun, excited and happy - I hope, at least! I would never want anyone to be like, I absolutely hate this.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TATTOO THAT YOU'VE DONE?
On my best friend. I tattooed her ass. The tattoo itself is a tribal, quite big and bold. It’s very fierce.
WHAT'S THE MOST COMMON REQUEST AT THE MOMENT?
Script. Large script. Little script. Everything script. People love it and I ain't complaining.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE LOOK LIKE?
I wake up, I take the dog for a walk, I go for coffee. Then I just hang around at the studio for a bit and see where the day takes me from there. No day is exactly the same, which is really good. I kind of love that variety.
